Work on IRR to be speeded up

Civic departments identify four main stretches for widening

A major part of the 53-km stretch will be taken up by the GHMC

Land acquisition will be completed by March 1, says official

HYDERABAD: With just two months for the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad to become operational and HUDA’s expressway getting delayed, the Government has pressed the pedal on GHMC to complete the Inner Ring Road (IRR) development.

IRR has become a key connecting road to the new airport from the city and as much was pointed out during a recent review meeting held by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, recently. The civic departments have identified four main stretches for widening – from Sangeet theatre to Uppal and Owaisi Hospital to Aramghar junction.

A major part of the 53-km stretch will be taken up by the GHMC and it has already estimated that it would cost up to Rs. 150 crore to widen the road and improve it. About 288 properties were identified for being taken over including 274 private properties.

Officials claimed that all road development plans are in place, notices issued to all owners and even land acquisition cases were filed in many cases. From YMCA junction to Sangeet theatre, 17 properties remain to be taken over; from Tarnaka to Uppal, 63 properties have to be taken over including land of Central Government institutes, from Owaisi Hospital to Chandrayangutta, 69 properties remain with 30 turned over few days ago.

Compensation

The Roads & Buildings Department is said to have paid up to Rs. 14 crore as compensation to the various scientific and defence research establishments to take part of their properties after permissions were obtained. Although the entire ORR was originally laid by the department, GHMC has been asked to take up the work. HUDA will be taken up road work from Aramghar junction to Rethibowli.

Railway property

The contentious railway property issue took another turn last week when GHMC questioned its ownership and refused to pay any compensation. Instead it was ready to build compound walls only. Earlier, the railways had sought a hefty land compensation of about Rs. 183 crore when the civic body sought 64,000 sq.mts of their land to widen the road from Sangeet junction to Tarnaka.

Officials are confident of pulling through. “We are deploying additional staff to complete land acquisition and complete all demolitions by March 1,” said GHMC Additional Commissioner (Planning & Projects) K. Dhananjaya Reddy.
