NEW DELHI: A Municipal Corporation of Delhi delegation led by Mayor Arti Mehra called on Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy here over the weekend seeking an ordinance to prevent demolition of illegal fourth and fifth floors in the Capital. The delegation, comprising Deputy Mayor Divya Jaiswal and Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya, drew the Union Minister’s attention to the urgent need to permit an increased Floor Area Ratio (FAR), allow sub-division of plots in residential areas and legalise sun sheds above 10 feet. Stressing that Delhiites would continue to live under the fear of demolition if the FAR was not increased, the delegates argued that people had been forced to add fourth and fifth floor to their houses over the years to accommodate burgeoning families and just allowing the maximum height of 15 meters would not protect such people against demolition. Mr. Arya demanded a one-time amnesty scheme to regularise all the buildings constructed before December 31, 2006. Taking up the issue of sun sheds, the municipal councillors pointed out that people in Delhi had constructed sun sheds at a height of 2.5 feet to protect windows and doors of their houses from rain water and the same had been sanctioned as per the buildings plans. However, there is no such provision in the new building by-laws which may lead to a situation where a large number of people will be compelled to demolish the sheds. The Minister gave a patient hearing to the delegation and said he agreed with their demands in principle, said a MCD release.
