THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The experts group appointed by the Union government to lay down the framework for the proposed Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) will submit its report by the end of next month. “Our term will come to an end by February 28. We are through with much of the data collection. We will hold three meetings this month in New Delhi to give shape to our draft report. The final version will be ready by February end,” Chairman of the seven-member group N.R. Madhava Menon told The Hindu here. The Union Ministry of Minority Affairs had appointed the expert group late last year to decide on the contours of the proposed EOC as a follow-up action on the Sachar Committee recommendations. It is to recommend the structure, scope and functions of the EOC and advise on the legislative framework for such a Commission. Academics like Javed Alam, Satish Deshpande and Yogendra Yadav are part of the group Emphasising that the formation of the EOC would be a landmark in the efforts to constitute institutional mechanisms for deprived sections in India, Prof. Menon said the proposed Commission would cover not only minorities but all disadvantaged sections like women, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and disabled people. Prof. Menon who is also the member of the Commission on Centre-State Relations headed by M.M. Punchi said the Commission had already sent its preliminary questionnaire to all States.
