TAMBARAM: A 55-year-old man was killed on the spot and four others injured when a tourist bus rammed into a stationary lorry on Grand Southern Trunk Road near Guduvanchery on Saturday morning.

The police identified the victim as V. Sukumar, a resident of Chromepet.

He was among a group of 40 people returning to their homes in Chennai after visiting Sabarimalai.

Around 6 a.m. on Saturday, the bus rammed the lorry parked near the intersection of GST Road and the road leading to Karanai Puduchery.

Ripped apart

The body of the bus, on its left side, was ripped apart, killing Sukumar on the spot. The victim was seated near the window, police said.

Four others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital.

Poor visibility

The police said poor visibility could have been one of the reasons for the accident.

Guduvanchery residents complained that parking of heavy vehicles along the margins of GST Road without switching on the parking lights posed a serious threat to road users.
