Lake breached
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Water drained out from the Nemilichery lake near Chromepet late on Friday night, resulting in inundation of a couple of localities nearby coming under the Pallavaram Municipality.
There is a sluice gate on the eastern side of the lake’s bund that has been in the centre of many controversies in the recent past.
In the absence of a proper gate to control the flow of water, officials have taken temporary measures including placing sand bags to prevent the water from draining out. These are often removed, reportedly by miscreants, to prevent encroachers’ property from getting inundated. Similar instances had taken place a few months ago. On Friday, the sand bags were removed again. Rainwater entered Om Sakthi Nagar and Postal Nagar. Officials of the Tambaram taluk, Public Works Department and the Pallavaram Municipality took up the work of plugging the breach and arrested the flow of water. The sluice gate was installed in 1914, but the shutters have vanished.
