Major shake-up in JD(S) on cards

Special Correspondent

Party workers to get importance in the run-up to polls

They will be asked to consolidate the party’s position

BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda has announced the appointment of five vice-presidents for the party and they would be assigned responsibility of managing the party affairs in five different regions of the State.

He told presspersons after attending the 146th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda at the party headquarters here on Saturday that in the next 45 days, there would be major reforms in the party set-up and the appointment of new vice-presidents would be the first step towards that eventuality.

A recent study carried out by the JD(S) on the party’s strength in various regions of the State had revealed that in each region, the party had a varying degree of presence and this had to be consolidated.

The new presidents would be asked to begin work in their region straightway.

Reforms

Asked what he was hoping to achieve from the major shake-up in the party, Mr. Deve Gowda said the prime interest in the party reforms was to prepare the party for the coming elections and to convey to the workers that they had an important role to play if the party had to succeed in the elections.

“Ours is not a cadre-based party and we depend fully on the grass-roots level workers and leaders. I and N. Merajuddin Patel have a larger share of work in triggering party development in all stages and this involves a lot of travelling all around the State,” Mr. Gowda said.

Appeal

Earlier, speaking at the 146th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda organised by the State Yuva Janata Dal, Mr. Deve Gowda appealed to the party workers to channelise power vested in them by the party to the last worker at the grass-roots level and empowering them to take up party work.

He said the teachings of Swami Vivekananda were not restricted to any one segment of society and there was so much to be learnt from the philosophy of Swami Vivekananda by everyone.

Earlier, Yuva Janata Dal (Secular) president Arvind M. Dalavai spoke.

Documentary

A documentary film on Swami Vivekananda was screened and an oration on the life of Vivekananda was delivered by the former MLC Ejasuddin Patel.
