Three institutions approved to enable students to register themselves for a Ph.D. degree NEW DELHI: In keeping with its tradition of encouraging research in different disciplines, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University here has got three new institutions -- Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the National Institute of Medical Statistics and the International Management Institute -- under its ambit. At the Academic Council meeting last November, the university had approved these institutions as research centres enabling students and professionals there to register themselves for a Ph.D. degree. The approval was given by the university after making due assessment of the establishment and infrastructural facilities available at the three institutions. The system of governance, academic and research activities undertaken were also evaluated, said Registrar V. K. Jain. “As a centre of higher learning, our university has a three-fold focus -- teaching, affiliation of institutions and promotion of research activities. Among several initiatives that the university takes to encourage quality research is the provision to approve external institutions and centres for undertaking research work and enrol Ph.D. scholars for the same,” he said. “A Ph.D. can only be awarded by a university. Those who want to do a Ph.D. from these institutions can register themselves with Indraprastha University as scholars. They carry out research in the research centres approved by us,,” explained Mr. Jain. In the past, the university has recognised the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, the Malaria Research Centre and the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad.
