ALAPPUZHA: Ending speculation whether he will attend the Alappuzha district conference of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) at Cherthala or not, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan attended the delegates’ session on Saturday. Mr. Achuthanandan arrived at around 6.30 p.m. from Aluva. Party sources said it was uncertain if he would attend the concluding day’s proceedings on Sunday. He is expected to inaugurate a public meeting at the culmination of the three-day conference at 5 p.m. at the S.N.M. Higher Secondary School grounds. The Chief Minister did not attend the inaugural session on Friday, and this triggered speculation and media reports that he was protesting against the faction led by party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan for alleged violation of Polit Bureau guidelines at several area conferences. However, Mr. Achuthanandan and Mr. Vijayan had clarified that he could not attend Friday’s session owing to official preoccupations. A Red Volunteer parade, comprising more than 40,000 party workers, will be held at Cherthala prior to the public meeting on Sunday. Mr. Vijayan and other leaders will address the meeting.
