Women’s cricket tournament held Large number of children witness the elders play BANGALORE: Naganna Grounds in Basavanagudi wore a festive look as a large number of women and children gathered there for a women’s cricket tournament organised by Spurthi Mahila Samaja of Hanumanthnagar on Saturday. It was inaugurated by C. Somashekara, Director, Tourism Department. Mahesh Joshi, Senior Director, Doordarshan; R. Ashok, former Health Minister; and K. Chandrashekar, former MLA, were present. In the afternoon, a large number of schoolchildren gathered at the venue to witness the elders play. In the grannies group match, Keerthi Mahila Sangha won the toss and elected to field. Put into bat, Spurthi Mahila Sangha scored 78 in 12 overs. Asha was the highest scorer with 26 runs. But the loudest cheers were reserved for 72-year-old Pramila Madhusudan, who made 22. For Keerthi XI, Komala bagged two wickets. Chasing their opponent’s score of 78, Keerthi XI scored 74. Girija scored 29 for Keerthi XI. In the mothers’ group, Keerthi Mahila Sangha scored 84 in 16 overs, with Latha Rao scoring 25. Batting second, Spurthi XI started well but could not force the pace. Needing six to win from the last over, Spurthi XI could muster only three runs and lost the match. Spurthi XI scored 82 in 12 overs, losing three wickets. Bharati Krishnappa, captain of Spurthi XI, remained unbeaten on 39 with six hits to the fence, while Sathya remained not out at 24. For Keerthi XI, Vinutha, Bharati and Shoba took one wicket each.
