CM lays stone for Basar IIIT

Staff Reporter

500 admissions every year

NIZAMABAD: Keeping his promise made to the people of Adilabad district for having shifted the Indian Institute of Technology to Medak, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy laid the foundation for the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Basar, 30 km from here, on Saturday.

Addressing a public meeting, he said the IIIT would be more useful than the IIT, as many students from backward Adilabad district would benefit. If the IIT had been established here, only a couple of students would have got seats.

The Chief Minister said the IIIT would come up in the 146-acre campus on the Basar-Adilabad road. Steps were being taken to create required infrastructure in next six months, for which Rs. 180 crore would be released. Admissions would commence in July. Every year, 500 admissions would be given on merit in SSC and no entrance test would be conducted for the six-year integrated course. Only rural students would have entry into the IIIT. Dr. Reddy said the Government Medical College sanctioned for Adilabad would also function from next academic year. To attract expertise and noted faculty, college would be accorded a special status. The faculty would be given handsome salaries.

Suitable location

As decided by the Cabinet, an airport would be set up 30 km away from Basar somewhere in Nizamabad district. Ministers T. Jeevan Reddy, J. Ratnakar Rao, R. Damodar Reddy and G. Vinod, MLAs Narayan Rao Patel, Indrakaran Reddy and P. Sudarshan Reddy, were those who attended.
