Lewis Barnes overcomes Vijayant Malik

CHANDIGARH: Fourth seed Vijayant Malik went down to ninth seed Lewis Barnes of Britain in the boys’ final of the ITF Grade III junior tennis tournament at the CLTA Complex here on Saturday.

The girls’ title went to top seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai of Thailand, who outplayed Anna Rapoport of Russia.

The Indian boys, fifth-seeded Chandril Sood and Lakshit Sood, had the consolation of winning the doubles title as they beat the fifth-seeded French-Belarussian combination of Joachim Sternbach and Ivan Kobzar.

The results (all finals):

U-18 boys: Lewis Barnes (GBR) bt Vijayant Malik 7-6(5), 6-4; Doubles: Lakshit Sood & Chandril Sood bt Joachim Sternbach (Fra) & Ivan Kobzar (Blr) 6-3, 7-5.

U-18 girls: Nicha Lertpitaksinchai (Tha) bt Anna Rapoport (Rus) 6-2, 6-3; Doubles: Margarita Lazareva & Anna Rapoport (Rus) bt Ganna Piven (Ukr) & Maria Meliuk Maria (Blr) 4-6, 7-5, 12-10.

Wild cards for Shweta, Karthik

Sai Karthik and Shweta Chandra Rana are among the wild card entrants for the ITF grade II junior tennis tournament to be held at the NTA Complex, on the Gurgaon-Pataudi Road, here from Monday.

The wild cards: Boys: Parul Verma, Mansingh Athare, N. Sai Karthik and Ankit Sachdeva. Girls: Prerna Mythri, Ankita Raina, Shweta Chandra Rana and Noor Paul. SD Academy posts win

Anuj Kumar, Kulbeet Rawat and Wasim Ahmad took three wickets each to guide Sumit Dogra Academy to a 16-run victory over Poorvi Delhi Academy in the eighth Shakuntala Dogra memorial cricket tournament at the Chilla Sports Complex here.

The scores: Sumit Dogra Academy 142 in 41.5 overs (Vikas Nigam four for 21) bt Poorvi Delhi Academy 126 in 34 overs.

Vidya, Esha qualify

Tamil Nadu’s N. Vidya and Delhi’s Esha Monga were among the qualifiers for the women singles main draw in the North Zone national ranking table tennis tournament at the AIIMS Student Gymkhana here on Saturday.

The qualifiers:

Men: Harmeet Desai (Guj), Soumya Nandi (Ben), Gaurav Brahamchari (Ben), Kaushik Phukan (Asm), Mohit Verma (PSPBA) and Vaneet Chopra (Pun).

Women: N. Vidya (TN) Jahnavi Deshpande (Rlys), Esha Monga (Del), and Swetha Kumaravel (IB).

Youth boys: Mochak Soni (Del), Sumit Kunte (Ben), Abhishek Mukherjee (Ben) and P. Puneet (Kar).

Youth girls: Ruchi Kalia (Pun).

Junior boys: Kamal Teja, M. N. Anish (both Tamil Nadu), Raghav Sachdeva and Mochak Soni (both Delhi).

Junior girls: Ankita Das and Shilpa Basak (both Bengal).

Sub-junior boys: Sabhay Virmani, Raghav Sachdeva, Arnav Sachdeva and Karan Wadhwa (all Delhi).

Gatorade Pacers selections

More than 500 players in the 15-22 age group turned up on the opening day of the Delhi selections of ‘Gatorade Pacers 2008’ on Saturday.

Players from Patiala, Meerut and Baghpat, apart from Delhi went through the selection process.

“I believe it is an excellent activity and has encouraged people to come and showcase their bowling skills in front of so many other participants. It is great to see the talent amongst these kids who are able to bowl with such great speed,” said Vivek Razdan, former India medium-pacer, one of the selectors.

The Delhi selection procedure will continue on Sunday.
