Yunus, Kavya clinch titles

PROUD WINNERS: Md. Yunus and Kavya Bharath, who won the BSNL junior tennis boys and girls’ titles, with the chief guest, Mr. M.P. Velusamy, Chief General Manager, BSNL Chennai Telephones.

Chennai: Md. Yunus defeated Rithvik Anand 6-2, 6-4, in the boys’ under-14 final of the BSNL junior tennis tournament, at KTC, Kottivakkam, on Saturday.

In the girls’ under-14 final, Kavya Bharath prevailed over A. Sharmila 6-2, 6-3.

Yunus served well consistently, while Rithvik’s first serves let him down. Yunus clinched the first set with ease, with his groundstrokes proving to be steadier than his opponent’s. Rithvik tried a little too hard for some of his shots, and committed unforced errors.

Mini-collapse

Yunus’s game suffered a mini-collapse in the second, when Rithvik gained a 3-0 lead. Rithvik showed much better control, consistently changed directions, lobbed when required and looked set to stretch his lead. Yunus managed his first break in the set with some good retrieving and a solid backhand.

Regains composure

He regained composure, and proved to be more patient during rallies.

His retrieving proved exceptional towards the end, and helped him seal the win.

The left-handed Kavya mixed it up well against Sharmila to clinch the title. Sharmila was lured into errors, and found it hard to wrest control.

Under-14 (finals): Boys: Md. Yunus bt Rithvik Anand 6-2, 6-4. Girls: Kavya Bharath beat A. Sharmila 6-2, 6-3.
