A day of low scores and wickets

CHENNAI: Barring an exception, it was a day of low scores and wickets in the TNCA senior division cricket league, the sixth round of which got underway on Saturday.

Only Grand Slam’s batsmen flourished as they put on 311 runs for the loss of four wickets and looking good enough to do more.

Contributions came right down the order with S. Suresh Kumar top-scoring with 79 (157b, 7x4).

A 113-run opening wicket stand between K.B. Arun Karthik (60) and X. Thalaivan Surgunam (48) set the tone for Grand Slam. J.R. Madanagopal (65) consolidated the position and Sunil Oasis (31 batting) is there to make Parry rue more for having put the opposition in.

Thirteen wickets fell at both the Railway and SRM grounds and the sufferers thus far were Alwarpet and Indian Bank respectively.

Medium-pacers M. Shyamsundar (four for 37) and L. Vignesh (three for 49) sent Alwarpet reeling.

Alwarpet was 79 for seven at one stage. Aruna, in reply, appeared cruising at 61 for no loss. S. Anirudha’s fall triggered a mini-collapse when three wickets fell. Anirudha made 46 (9x4) and at stumps, Aruna was 68 for three.

At SRM ground, Indian Bank, put in, was bundled out for 163, J. Dinesh Kumar being the leading scorer (67).

Medium-pacer R. Devendiran picked four for 40.

Despite South Zone skipper S. Badrinath’s 78, Jolly Rovers could not go beyond 212 against India Pistons, which started confidently and was 37 for no loss.

At MAC: IOB 206 in 86.4 overs (A.S.K. Varma 62, R. Sunil four for 51) vs. Young Stars two for no loss in one over.

At MRF-Pach ‘A’: Globe Trotters 240 for seven in 96 overs (Juzes Abbas 54, Sunil Viswanathan 43 not out) vs. Eagle CC.

At Railway ground: Alwarpet CC 160 in 65.1 overs (Gary Dumenil 41, M. Shyamsundar four for 37) vs. Aruna CC 68 for three in 24 overs.

At ICL-Guru Nanak: Grand Slam 311 for four in 90 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 60, X. Thalaivan Sargunam 48, J.R. Madanagopal 65, S. Suresh Kumar 65) vs. Parry.

At SRM: Indian Bank 163 in 63 overs (J. Dinesh Kumar 67, R. Devendiran four for 40) vs. Vijay CC 85 for three in 27 overs (R. Prasanna 41 not out).

At IIT-Chemplast: Jolly Rovers 212 in 73.2 overs (R. Ramkumar 40, S. Badrinath 78, M. Prabhu five for 97) vs. India Pistons 37 for no loss in 14 overs.

Maran-Roy in final

Maran and Roy Mathew (MRC) will play Subikshan and Sathyanrayana Rao (Mylapore Club) in the final of the men’s doubles event in the Mylapore Club-Bank of India inter-club badminton tournament.

In the semifinals, Maran and Roy defeated Dobson and Muthukumarasamy (MRC) 21-13, 21-17, while Subikshan and Sathyanarayana Rao beat Saravanan and Preeth Kumar (MRC) 21-8, 21-12.

Other results: Semifinals: Mixed doubles: Kaavya & Subikshan (Mylapore) bt Aparna & Sathyanrayana Rao 21-18, 21-16; Roy & Susan (MRC) bt Sandeep & Ramya (Mylapore) 24-22, 21-18. Veterans doubles: Ashok & Farooq (Towers) bt Raghavan & Jayaraman (Mylapore) 21-19, 6-21, 21-15.

Hari, Madhana win

R. Harikrishnan and B. Madhana emerged the under-13 boys’ and girls’ winners respectively in the Jaya Rolling Trophy Thiruvallur district chess championship on Friday.
