One more village defies jallikattu ban

Staff Reporter

SIVAGANGA: As a mark of registering protest, one more village in the district conducted jallikattu on Saturday defying the Supreme Court order.

A large number of bull tamers and villagers attended the jallikattu at M. Pudur near here. About 100 specially-reared bulls were released for taming. As a custom, the organisers released the temple bull first.

The participants raised slogans against banning jallikattu.

They demanded the State Government to appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court immediately so as to lift the ban. They warned that more jallikattu events would be conducted as scheduled.

Superintendent of Police Kannan said that 4 persons were arrested for organising jallikattu against the court order at Soorakudi near S.V. Mangalam on Friday. They included Meyyappan, Chinnaiah and Selvam.

Mr. Kannan said tight security had been provided at various places to thwart attempts to organise jallikattu. He had conducted meeting with leaders of several villages and received written statement that they would not conduct jallikattu in view of the court order.

Considering the reports of villagers defying court order, he said that strict instructions were issued to all police officials to visit villages to speak to the people and educate them on the importance of respecting the Supreme Court order.

A district-level meeting would also be organised to discuss the ways and means to implement the Supreme Court order.
