dated January 14, 1958: Friendship Day

President Rajendra Prasad and leaders of the “anuvrat” movement appealed to the people of the world to strive for peace by fostering feelings of friendship between individuals and nations at a public meeting held in New Delhi on January 11 to celebrate the “Friendship Day”. The movement aimed at focussing the attention of the people to the need for discarding mutual distrust and suspicion and fostering goodwill and cooperation. The meeting passed a resolution calling upon people all over the world to celebrate “Friendship Day” in the beginning of every New Year and discuss means and ways of reducing causes of tensions and fostering friendship between individuals and societies and nations.
