Chess
NEW DELHI: Delhi-girl Dhara Gupta is fast reinforcing the impressionof being a ‘first-round wonder’. Dhara provided the biggest upset of the opening round of Rs. 10-lakh Parsvnath International Open chess tournament when she brought down IM Vikramaditya Kamble here on Sunday. Last month, Dhara had hit the headlines by beating seasoned IM Anup Deshmukh in the first round of Commonwealth championship here. Against Kamble, in English opening, Dhara accepted a sacrificed pawn but later played poorly to lose two pawns. In a tricky endgame position, Dhara played accurately and forced Kamble to resign in 65 moves. Decisive resultsOn a day when the top 17 boards produced expected victories for the seeds, 18th seed Turkmenistan’s Grandmaster Sapar Batyrov, rated 2471, dropped half-a-point to unknown Johnharry Perreira, rated 1899. Recently-crowned Asian junior boys’ champion P. Karthikeyan also failed to get off to a winning start and surprisingly drew with lowly-rated J.M. Baisakh. Unrated S. Adirathna Kumar also came up with a memorable performance by holding former National player, IM Ravi Hegde. Former National ‘A’ player G. B. Joshi escaped a possible defeat at the hands of unrated youngster Y. Narayana Aswartha and drew.
