Education system needs revamp

I am very much thankful to Sri Ranjan Mohanty, secretary of PECUC, who dared enough to suggest the Orissa Government to enhance 25 per cent expenditure on education.

Money is not the only criteria to bring a structural change in the field of education. The present system needs a radical change in syllabus, instructional methods, provision of play and infrastructure.

Adequate staff is essentially a question of the day. In fact, education has become a neglected one.

A film for all

Noted actor Aamir Khan’s recent film Taare Zameen Par is a film for everbody. A movie made specially for children made after many years and something different from other movies.

Aamir Khan chooses the most sensitive subject -- mental position of a child -- and successfully tried to solve the day-to-day problem that most children are facing in the modern competitive world and it is an eye-opener to the parents those who are trying to make their children directly doctors and engineers ignoring his basic foundation and present requirement of mental and physical need of the child.

Further, Aamir Khan deserves the best appreciation from all quarters. Though he is in the lead role, the actor gives importance to the child artist. It’s a film for every child and every parent. The government should exempt the entertainment tax on the film.

Poser to sports associations

Recently, former national hockey captain Dilip Tirkey has been accused of ignoring PHL Hockey Tournament, in which Orissa is the major player. The allegation was brought by his own hockey association.

Dillip was not the only player who was at the receiving end of the accusation. Several national players were also blamed that they were not playing in true spirit. The controversy cropped up over contentious appointment of Orissa’s hockey coach for the tournament. But, I would like to ask one simple question about these sports associations.

Why are they operating? Whom they are answerable to? Why cannot they keep mum and work like a facilitator of the game?

Associations have become dalal of the sports. The same association did not come with a flower to welcome victorious hockey players when they returned from winning Asia Cup against their arch rival.
