Rural job scheme from April 1

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would be implemented in all the village panchayats in the district from April 1, Collector V. Chandrasekaran has said.

In a statement, he said that each family would get a guaranteed employment for 100 days in a financial year. The salary for individuals would be Rs. 80 a day.

Stating that each village panchayat could get works worth up to Rs. 10 lakh, the Collector said that the panchayat president would implement the programme.

All those who have completed 18 years of age and interested to work under the scheme must register themselves with the president. Neither contractors would be involved nor machinery be used to carry out the works selected under the programme.

The panchayats could take up projects such as creation of new ooranis, laying earthen roads, deepening tanks and ooranis, repairing supply channels and works to minimise damage during floods.

Training would be provided to Block Development Officers, panchayat presidents, ward members, panchayat assistants and ‘makkal nala paniyalargal’ for effective implementation of the programme.

Stating that the Government was withdrawing Sampoorna Grama Rozgar Yojana from the next financial year, the Collector ordered the officials to complete all pending works under the scheme by January 31. If the works were not completed, the unspent funds as on March 31, 2008 would be transferred to the NREGP accounts of the panchayats, Mr. Chandrasekaran, said.
