Women football tourney to begin on January 24

BHUBANESWAR: Commencing on January 24, the second annual State women football league will be hosted at the Saharpada mini stadium in Keonjhar district. The mega event is being organised by Sarbeswar Football Association of Saharpada in association with the District Athletic Association of Keonjhar and Keonjhar District Women Football Association.

Eight teams are slated to participate in the 11-day event. While Group X will have Bhubaneswar, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar and Rourkela; Sambalpur, Kendrapara, Sundargarh and Cuttack are under the Y Group, according to the organisers.

Host Keonjhar will encounter the well-groomed Bhubaneswar team on January 24 in the opening match followed by matches between Jharsuguda and its neighbouring Rourkela district and Sambalpur versus Sundargarh team on the following day. Similarly, Kendrapara will face Cuttack followed by a match between Jharsuguda and Bhubaneswar on January 26. Two matches are slated for January 27 -- Sambalpur and Kendrapara followed by Keonjhar versus Rourkela while on January 28 Sundargarh will meet Cuttack followed by another match between Jharsuguda and Keonjhar. Matches between Rourkela and Bhubaneswar and Sundargarh and Kendrapara are scheduled for January 29 while the lone match on January 30 will be between Sambalpur and Cuttack. Winner of the X Group will face the runners up of Y Group on January 31 while winner of the Y Group will play against the runners up of X Group on the following day. The final match is fixed for January 3.
