PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Pollution Control Committee has requested the public not to burn rubber, tyre and plastic materials on Bhogi since they emit air pollutants such as carbon-mono-oxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur-di-oxide and dioxins. A press release here from M. Arunachalam, Committee Member-Secretary, said carbon-di-oxide caused disorders of the heart and central nervous systems; nitrogen oxide caused acid rain and eye irritation; dioxins cause cancer. The Puducherry and Oulgaret municipalities have also warned of stern action if people burn tyres, plastic and rubber. In separate press releases, the commissioners of the municipalities said the public must also avoid burning other things such as old mats, paper and clothes on the occasion of Bhogi festival.
