Cricket controversies

The reason for the on and off field troubles since late 40s, I feel, is due to excessive exhibitionist gesticulation and celebrations that the players indulge in whenever a player is declared out. The simian rolling of Harbhajan Singh on the ground when he took the wicket for nought of the Aussies captain is an example. Likewise, the provocative gesture by Ponting of raising his finger when Ganguly was waiting for umpire’s decision is another instance. It is pertinent to mention that during the 1948 Oval Test when the great Don (Donald Bradman) playing his last Test was bowled for zero, there was muted silence and a sigh of disappointment from the players and spectators and no celebrations! Not for no reason, ‘The battle of waterloo was won on the playfields of Eton’. It is high time the on-field behaviour of players is moderated if not curbed by all the cricket administrations worldwide so that the lovers of the game of cricket which used to be synonymous with good and gentlemanly behaviour is restored to its earlier glory.

Entry fee

The imposition of parking fees in the RTC bus stand/depot in MVP colony is ridiculous and atrocious as it is charged even for entry into the premises by the contractor collecting the fee who is rude. The internal roads are not paved, and the only benefit of parking inside the locality leads to accumulation of dust on the vehicles. Moreover, the intention of coming to the bus stand is for getting a rail ticket. APSRTC should forthwith stop collecting parking fees in the area, and the kutcha roads are uneven and were not black topped even after a lapse of 2 or 3 decades of allotment by VUDA. Even the adjoining greenery appears brownish in colour due to the suspended dust and grime settling on the leaves of the trees, destroying the ambience of the locality. If APSRTC cannot take good care of the land allotted by VUDA, it should hand over the same to VUDA, as MVP Colony is one of the best colonies in Visakhapatnam.

Run special buses

The APSRTC should run special buses for school and college going students on bus passes during morning and evening. Students, particularly girls are forced to wait for long for the buses while the drivers do not stop till all the girls get on board. The APSRTC officials should know they are paying for the bus passes. I appeal to the Government to provide separate buses to students.

Felling of trees

Indiscriminate felling of trees alongside roads of various colonies has become a regular feature. This is mostly done by the electricity departments of power distribution and maintenance. Recently, a commercial organisation in MVP Colony double road cut off huge branches of a tree to have a better view of its bill board, resulting in sudden stoppage of power, with a thunder-like sound for over 45 minutes. This was done without informing the electrical substation concerned. This resulted in electrical appliances of many of the houses damaged. When residents of Sector 4 complained to the department, no action was taken against the culprit for the reasons best known to them.
