ADILABAD: Maoists Thalandi Motiram alias Akash, a former deputy commander of Mangi dalam in Adilabad district, and his wife Shaikh Haseena alias Saroja, also a former member of the same dalam, surrendered to the district police on Sunday. The two had been working in Dandakaranya area in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh State since December 2006.

Producing them at a press conference, Adilabad Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar and Bellampalli Additional Superintendent of Police K. Ramesh said Motiram and Haseena were wanted in nine and three cases respectively. Their photos were published in a poster of wanted naxalites in the district.

Underground life

Motiram had started his underground life in October 2001 working as Mangi dalam member and as gunman to Seshanna, a member of the North Telangana Special Zone Committee, till 2004. Later he worked as commander of a special guerrilla squad until 2006. Among the nine offences in which he was involved was the murder of Sabitha in 2005 under Asifabad police station limits.

Haseena, who was also involved in Sabitha’s murder, had joined the Mangi dalam just before the murder. Motiram and Haseena carried a reward of Rs. 10,000. They surrendered citing health reasons and disillusionment with party ideology.

Mr. Anil Kumar urged the naxalites, who still led an underground life, to join the mainstream by surrendering. He said a few top notch naxals might surrender in the coming days.
