Hospital criticises Commissioner’s action over garbage disposal

Staff Correspondent

The official, on seeing the waste, had it dumped in front of the hospital

Two private agencies said to have been deputed to dispose of waste

DAVANGERE: The City Medical Centre has refuted allegations made by Commissioner of the Davangere City Corporation Pranalinga Shivasali, with regard to the dumping of medical waste on roads. The CMC claimed that it had awarded a contract to two private agencies to collect medical and solid waste from its premises every day and dispose of it in a place specified for the purpose.

It may be recalled here that the Commissioner, after seeing heaps of medical waste left beside a road near the medical centre, grew suspicious of its waste disposal mechanism. He immediately summoned some pourakarmikas and with their help left the garbage right in front of the medical centre. The management claimed that it was not substance generated from their hospital, and said they had adhered to rules while disposing of garbage.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Dr. B. Shyam Sunder Shetty and Dr. Sharada Shetty of the medical centre said they had been running the hospital for the past 25 years and that it had a scientific waste disposal system.

Showing a copy of the contract the hospital had with private agencies, Dr. Sharada Shetty said the hospital did not even throw a single used piece of cotton on the roads. The hospital authorities would instruct patients and their attendants not to throw waste outside.

‘Judgemental’

Dr. Sharada Shetty wondered as to how the Commissioner could conclude that it was the medical centre which had disposed of the garbage without any conclusive proof. She said there were many hospitals including the Chigateri General Hospital in the area which could have done so. “He could have crosschecked with all hospitals situated in the locality before coming to a conclusion,” she said.
