Sir, — The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board have revised the water tariff without looking in to the welfare of the people of both cities. The new tariff affects 7.25 lakh customers who are outside the 24x7 water scheme, and is beneficial to 1.25 lakh people living in areas covered by the scheme. Although the HDMC charges uniform rates for services such as trade licences, building permission, hotel licences, vendor licences and vehicle cess for those living in the twin cities, differential rates governing water supply are justified. The HDMC Commissioner should sort out the issue immediately. Balmurali Krishna, Mangalore Protests justifiedSir, — The widespread protests by Kannada activists against the alleged unfair recruitment process in the South-Western Railway Zone are fully justified. It is said that in the earlier recruitment process too, more than 80 per cent of vacancies were filled by non-Kannadigas. The rationale behind locating the South Western Railway zonal office in Hubli was to create employment opportunities for the people of the State. This purpose now seems to have been defeated. It is high time the Railways framed guidelines to encourage inclusive representation. B.H. Shanmukhappa, Davanagere Janata DarshanSir, — Governor Rameshwar Thakur is holding Janata darshans in Bangalore. I request him to hold the same at districts, once a month. At taluk-level, the tahsildars should hold janata darshans, every month. The grievances and applications received during these darshans should be appropriately attended to and action taken. The development activities should not be stopped during President’s rule in the State and the government officials should discharge their duties sincerely. S.N. Amrith Malla, Mangalore Fare increase Sir, — The demand for fare increase by autorickshaw drivers is unjustified as most vehicles use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The proposed minimum fare of Rs. 20 is not acceptable as the current rates are good enough to run petrol-driven vehicles as well. The authorities should not give in to their demands. V.
