Chandigarh: Martyr Bhagat Singh appears to be a favourite calendar boy this year in Punjab. A handcuffed Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the freedom fighter in a hat twirling his moustache or reading a book on a cot in the jail, bearing the caption “Inquilab Zindabad” dots many a walls in Punjab. After celebrating his birth anniversary in September 2007 with much enthusiasm, a large number of voluntary organisations and many government employees’ unions have come out with calendars on the ‘Shaheed’ theme. Desh Bhagat Yaadgari Hall in Jalandhar is flooded with requests for photos of Bhagat Singh. According to Gurmit, secretary of cultural wing of the Hall, over two lakh Bhagat Singh calendars and posters have been published in the last few months. The photo of the martyr sitting on a “charpai” in police custody is the most sought after. However, the official calendar of the Punjab government for 2008 does not have any space devoted to the Shaheed. PTI
