Green medians in bad shape

Few years back the road between Benz Circle and Ring Road was developed into a four-lane road. The dividers were fenced with barbed wire and floral plants were grown. Now, that the fence has been removed for vehicle parking, some people have made the dividers their dwelling place and many pushcarts have made their way into the dividers. Because of poor maintenance and insufficient lighting during nights, people are afraid of using the side lanes. The trees are also not maintained properly. As the entire stretch is dotted with colleges, banks, hospitals and educational institutions, the authorities concerned should take stock of the situation and do the needful.

Take the help of senior citizens

To reduce crime, police can use the services of senior citizens by implementing neighbourhood watch, which is successful in developed countries. Even in rural areas, it has been practiced for many decades where the senior citizens keep an eye on their neighbourhood, particularly for the sake of neighbours, who have gone out. They also used to check domestic violence and the movements of strangers in the locality. Nowadays, the old people do not feel like inquiring about their neighbours, as the response is lukewarm on many occasions. It is time to develop a system of security with joint effort of senior citizens and police on the lines of the developed countries.

Change bus terminus

The present arrangement of all city buses entering the City Bus Terminal at Pandit Nehru Bus Station should be stopped. Instead, the eastern block of the bus station (comprising platforms 18 to 27) should be made alighting points for city buses that leave for Kaleswara Rao Market and proceed through National Highway-5. Vidyadharapuram-bound buses can be operated via over bridge, which is just 50 meters away from the bus station.

The present City Bus Terminal should be used exclusively for Hyderabad-bound buses. By making such small changes to the arrival and departure points of the buses, the officials can reduce inconvenience to commuters.

Waive affiliation fee

The Government’s decision to exempt students from paying corpus fund to the Government Degree Colleges in certain areas is welcome. There are over 700 Government degree colleges in the State and most of them are located in rural areas, catering to the academic needs of the poor students. Besides corpus fund, the students are finding it difficult to pay the affiliation fee too. I request the authorities concerned to take steps either to reimburse the affiliation fee or recommend for waiver of the same to the universities concerned.
