Anti-dumping duty on organic drug goes

NEW DELHI: The Centre has decided to lift the anti-dumping duty on imports of ‘Trimethroprim,’ an organic drug intermediate, from China. A notification was issued by the Central Board of Customs and Excise last week.

An anti-dumping duty of $19.71 a kg was imposed on the chemical in 2002 following an investigation by the Finance Ministry which found that the import of the product from China at below market prices was affecting the domestic industry.

The duty was imposed at the behest of two domestic companies — Alpha Drugs India Ltd. and Inventaa Chemicals Ltd. — which had filed a petition alleging dumping of the chemical originating or exported from China. They had also sought the launch of anti-dumping probe and levy of anti-dumping duties. A probe by the Directorate of Anti-Dumping during 1999-2000 found substance in the allegation and the penal duty was finally imposed on its imports from China.

The anti-dumping duty on imports of float glass from China and Indonesia, however, will continue. In 2003, the Ministry imposed an anti-dumping duty of $71-81 per tonne on float glass imported from Indonesia and $72.27 per tonne on imports from China in 2003.
