TNEB-City Police in exciting draw

Chennai: In an exciting contest in which the lead tantalisingly changed hands, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chennai City Police shared six goals in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday.

What added an element of thrill was the manner in which TNEB recovered from 0-2 till late in the first half.

Dominic struck within five minutes from the start and Raman enlarged the lead before the end of the opening quarter.

It was a goal by Doraisingam that put TNEB back in the fight before the end of the first half. Still trailing 1-2, TNEB went in search of the equaliser and obtained it off a penalty stroke by Balamurugan.

Even as the minutes ticked by, TNEB surged ahead when Ganesh Murthy sounded the boards to raise visions of a victory.

City Police, which initially had a comfortable lead, was on the verge of suffering a reverse but one minute before the final whistle Parthiban scored and the day’s honours were shared.

The league will have a two-day break and resume on Wednesday.

SAI beats DBYC

DBYC (Basin Bridge) lost to SAI 1-2 in the inaugural match of the Don Bosco-Fr Gerard football tournament here.

Suresh scored first for SAI in the sixth minute and A. Vijayan equalised in the 52nd minute. Three minutes later came the match winner from Elamurugan.

The tournament was inaugurated by R. Chandran, Assistant Commissioner of Police.

The organisers announced that Chennai Customs had withdrawn from the tournament and Don Bosco (Anna Youth) has been included in its place.
