New Delhi
Delhi BJP leader Vijay Goel along with party workers staging a demonstration outside the Chief Minister’s residence in New Delhi on Sunday. NEW DELHI: Led by former Union Minister Vijay Goel, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a demonstration near Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s residence here on Sunday. The group was demanding resignation of Ms. Dikshit and Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken in view of their failure to regularise over 1,500 unauthorised colonies in the Capital. According to Mr. Goel: “The Central and the State Government have not exhibited seriousness in this issue and appear to be apathetic to the suffering of over 50 lakh people living in these colonies. The layout plans of 80 per cent of these colonies have been prepared and residents have spent a lot of money on the necessary paperwork.” Calling the recent “rift” between Ms. Dikshit and Mr. Maken a “pre-election gimmick”, the veteran BJP leader said: “The October 5 guidelines issued by the Union Urban Development Ministry had all the information that Mr. Maken is now contesting. The Delhi Government had also issued an advertisement on November 14 for regularisation. If Mr. Maken wanted to protest he should have done so at that time.” Mr. Goel said if the Government could call on prospective voters on a door-to-door basis why was it finding it difficult to ensure proper layout plans for unauthorised colonies. “The regularisation should be similar to the pattern that was followed in 1977 when over 500 colonies were regularised. It is the duty of the Government to provide proper layout plans and basic amenities in these colonies,” he added.
