Alappuzha
P.K. Chandranandan ALAPPUZHA: On of the senior-most Communists in the State P.K. Chandranandan was unanimously re-elected Alappuzha district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the concluding day of the party’s district conference at Cherthala, near here, on Sunday. The conference also elected a 44-member district committee apart from selecting 44 delegates for the State conference to be held in Kottayam in February. 7 members droppedSeven committee members, all of whom were known to be supporters of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, were dropped from the committee. This faction is learnt to have submitted a ‘dissent note’ to the committee though they did not attempt to contest the decision through voting. Those who were dropped included M.R. Rajasekharan, P.V. Ramanathan, C. Shyam Sunder, V.K. Vasudevan, M. Raghuprasad, K. Karunakaran and G. Radhakrishnan. Mr. Chandranandan, speaking to reporters later, said the seven were dropped for “various organisational reasons” and to make way for “young blood”. New membersThose who found place in the new committee included A.S. Sabu, A. Omanakuttan, P. Ganakumar, M.H. Rasheed and M. Satyapalan. Mr. Chandranandan, however, chose to state that all factional differences that were plaguing the party had been put to rest with the district conference and that the party would move forward with greater unity. “The unanimous election is proof enough that all troubles within the party have been sorted out. Young blood has also been given a chance to utilise their calibre,” he said. The 82-year-old Mr. Chandranandan, for whom this is the fourth tenure as the party’s district secretary, was first elected in 1964.
