THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nearly 30 activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) staged a dharna outside the Thampanoor police station late on Sunday night, demanding action against an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) for allegedly assaulting a CPI(M) member. The CPI(M) activists said S.I. Sundar, Attukal ward councillor and a local committee secretary of the party, was assaulted by ASI Ramesh when he tried to save a fellow activist and local committee member, Sunil, from being ‘roughed up’ by the police inside the Thampanoor police station. Mr. Sunil had reportedly questioned the ASI on the propriety of taking one of his neighbours in Valiasala to the police station without the escort of a woman constable. His neighbour was reportedly taken to the police station for questioning based on a complaint lodged by her against her husband following an altercation with him. The activists finally dispersed after Deputy Commissioner of Police Somanatha Pillai assured them that necessary action would be taken against the police official after conducting an investigation.
