BANGALORE: More than four lakh transport vehicles, including trucks, private buses, maxi-cabs and tourist taxis, will be off the roads on January 20 in the State if the Government does not withdraw the mandatory enforcement of installation of speed governors. This decision was taken at a meeting convened by the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association and attended by representatives of associations of different categories here on Saturday. Federation president G.R. Shanmugappa said,“The strike will continue till the Government withdraws the directive.” The grouse of transport vehicle owners is that the rule is being enforced in Karnataka alone and not elsewhere. As such, transport vehicles in the State will be handicapped and will not be able to compete with their counterparts resulting in losses. Mr. Shanmugappa said that with the rules being enforced with effect from January 1, more than 20,000 trucks were off the roads as they were not given fitness certificates by the Transport Department for want of speed governors. Vehicles from other States were cashing in on the situation since department officials were not insisting on speed governors on those vehicles, he alleged. The decision to compel the installation of speed governors was taken after a report by a legislature committee in 2005. However, the date of enforcement was extended several times. It was finally fixed for January 1, 2008.
