BANGALORE: There are three aspirants seeking ticket from the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee to contest from the Chickpet Assembly constituency, one of the smallest Assembly constituencies in the State in geographical and electoral terms. Disclosing this at a Jana Samparka meeting organised by the Chickpet Assembly Constituency unit of the party here, the former Minister and Bangalore City unit president of the party, Ramalinga Reddy, said that three workers, including M. Satyanarayana Swamy, have asked if they could contest from Chickpet constituency. Mr. Reddy, however, said that the decision was left to the party High Command. He claimed that the previous Government had banned arrack with an ulterior design of helping the liquor lobby at the cost of the poor who were now forced to pay Rs. 30 to Rs. 50 for 180 ml of brandy or whisky whereas they used to buy arrack at Rs. 20 or less earlier. Ridiculing the claim of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (S) leaders that they had provided the best governance in the last 60 years in the State during their rule, Mr. Reddy said that the 20-month regime was full of “malpractice and irregularities.” The former Minister, V. Somanna, held the coalition partners in the previous Government responsible for forcing a premature dissolution of the Assembly and mid-term elections on the people. Dinesh Gundu Rao, former MLA, said that all the wings of the party such as the NSUI, labour, minority, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, backward classes and Mahila Congress should work for the success of the party candidates. R.V. Venkatesh, MLC, D. Pramod, Congress leader, H.D. Gangaraj, former president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, and Padmavathi, president of the Mahila Congress, were present.
