India overwhelms Philippines

NEW DELHI: The Indian team broke little sweat to humble Philippines 3-0 in the bilateral tennis Test at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

The first Test did not take place at Puttaparthi on Saturday as planned, due to unforseen circumstances.

Indian players, Ashutosh Singh, Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan were too good for the Filipinos.

The reigning National grass court champion Vishnu Vardhan outplayed the 27-year-old Johnny Arcilla 6-3, 6-4. Divij Sharan then defeated Patrick John Tierro in straight sets.

The doubles, restricted to a single set, was easily won by the Indians.

The results: India beat Philippines 3-0 (Vishnu Vardhan bt Johnny Arcilla 6-3, 6-4; Divij Sharan bt Patrick John Tierro 6-1, 7-6(4); Ashutosh Singh and Divij Sharan bt Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro 7-6(2)).
