The seventeenth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Higher Secondary School at Madukkur in Thanjavur district was held last week. Mahatma Gandhi Educational Trust president B. Prakasam presided over the function. Thavathiru Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar was chief guest. Adigalar urged students to develop an attitude to serve the society. Education provides them knowledge as well as experience. Correspondent T. Udhaykumar delivered a speech. Principal M. Swaminathan presented the annual report. Rally conductedStudents took out a rally to create awareness of environment protection in Thanjavur on Monday. District Revenue Officer M. Karunakaran flagged off the rally from the railway station. In the rally jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Divya voluntary organisation, 300 students from Gnanam Matriculation School participated. The rally passed through main streets and ended at Sivaganga Park. Students appealed to people not to burn tyres or plastics and keep the town clean. They raised slogans against using plastic and appealed to the people to avoid its use. Mr. Karunakaran said that burning of tyres, rubber and plastics led to lung diseases. Air is also polluted. Such practices should be avoided. Environment engineer K. Gopalakrishnan, assistant environment engineer S. Poongodi and representatives of Divya participated in the rally. Youth Day celebratedNational Youth Day was celebrated at Shri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Thanjavur with a call to the youths to use all their power for ushering in a new era. Panayakottai Government HSS Headmaster J. Balaguru was the chief guest and he outlined Swami Vivekananda’s spiritual services to the entire society. Principal S. Gowri, in her presidential address, urged the students to understand the value of potentialities among the younger generation. Correspondent S. P. Balasubramanian urged the students to follow the popular slogan of ‘Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached’. Academic Director C. Jaishankar spoke on the relationship between the teacher and the students. The students presented cultural progammes including staging a drama depicting the life history of Swami Vivekananda. Medical campStudents of Government Model Higher Secondary School in Pudukottai were screened during a medical camp conducted by the Health Department recently. A team of doctors examined over 1,000 students of the school for health disorders. Needy students were given medicines free. School Principal S. Rajasekar inaugurated the camp and the volunteers of the NSS, NCC, Scouts and Junior Red Cross extended help for the success of the camp. All the arrangements for the camp were made by NSS District Liaison Officer P. Muthukumaran and others. Pongal celebratedPongal festival was celebrated with usual gaiety at the Seetha Lakshmi Vidhyashram, Pudukottai town. School chairman S. V. S. Vijayakumar presided over the function and correspondent S. A. Anbumuthu spoke on the importance of Pongal. A pattimanram on the topic “which is the best Pongal: Sooriya Pongal and Maattu Pongal” was held in which students actively participated. The students also presented cultural programmes including folk songs and dances, plays and martial arts. Led by A. Hemamalini Anbumuthu, the teachers prepared “Samathuva Pongal’ and distributed it to participants.
