PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry town unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has sought a probe into the alleged refusal to treat a patient from Tiruvannamalai district at the Indira Gandhi Government Hospital and Post-Graduate Institute here. Not a residentSecretary of the town committee B. Anandhu, in a memorandum submitted to Lieutenant-Governor Mukut Mithi on Sunday, said the 80-year-old patient Singaram, who came to the hospital with renal problem was “denied treatment” since he was not a resident of the Union Territory. “The duty doctor in the General Medicine Department after knowing the patient’s native place refused to treat him and also instructed the patient to get treatment at Tiruvannamalai,” the memorandum said. The reason cited by the Medical Superintendent for not giving treatment was “shortage of medicine and the Hospital authorities have taken a policy decision not to treat out-station patients,” it added. Mr. Anandhu also appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to initiate a probe by an independent agency and take necessary action against the doctors concerned.
