Agriculture Department workshop tomorrow

KASARAGOD: The World Trade Organisation (WTO) cell of the Department of Agriculture and the WTO centre of the College of Agriculture, Padannakkad, under the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), are jointly organising a workshop on ‘International treaty on plant genetic resource and protection of plant varieties and farmers rights’ on the Padannakkad campus here on January 16.

Hosdurg MLA Pallipram Balan would inaugurate the workshop at 9.30 a.m., College Associate Dean I. John Kutty said at a press conference here on Monday. Central Plantation Crops Research Institute, Kasaragod, Director V. Thomas will preside over the function.

Experts would deliver orientation lectures on various topics.

The topics include ‘International treaty on plant genetic resources,’ ‘Protection of plant varieties and farmers rights Act’ and ‘Bio-diversity issues and geographical indications of goods.’

Those who are expected to handle sessions include Sudhir K. Soam of the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad; S. Balaravi, advisor at M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai; D. Alexander, Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University and C.R. Elsy, Professor of Horticulture, Vellanikkara.

A. Sreeja, Special Officer, WTO centre of the college, said farmers, scientists, teachers and representatives of non- governmental organisations would participate.
