I am not politicising the issue, says Ananthamurthy ‘My aim is to save varsity’s image’
U.R. Anantamurthy MYSORE: Disturbed by the controversies surrounding the Mysore University in recent days, Jnanapith Award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy has decided to request the Governor to appoint a person who is not connected to the university as Vice-Chancellor and urge him on reconstituting the “search committee” formed to recommend a “suitable candidate” for the post. Dr. Ananthamurthy, who studied and taught in the university, told presspersons here on Monday that he was pained by the recent developments, which had marred the image of the varsity “Only a person from a different university can probe the irregularities objectively and impartially,” he said. Attributing what he achieved in his life to Mysore University, Dr. Ananthamurthy said: “I don’t know whether there is truth in the allegations of irregularities in the university. I am not against anybody. My intention to meet the Governor is to save the image of the university, which I adore the most,” he said. He further clarified that he was not politicising the issue, but was fighting for a “good” cause. Referring the episode of the reported recommendation by a professor for award of Ph.D. to a candidate even before her thesis could be evaluated, Dr. Ananthamurthy said he had learnt that the name of the professor had also figured in the list submitted by the “search committee”. If the allegations levelled against him were true, he should not be made a Vice-Chancellor under any circumstances, as that would lead to what happened in case of the former Vice-Chancellor Shashidhar Prasad earlier. His candidature was rejected owing to a case against him then. Dr. Ananthamurthy also said that he had no objection in case the Governor would ask his own team of officials to inquire into the irregularities.
