Raichur: The work to improve infrastructure in most of the government higher secondary schools in the district proposed for the current financial year is behind schedule owing to lack of interest by the authorities concerned. The Government had sanctioned funds to the zilla panchayat for infrastructure development in all the government higher secondary schools in the district under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in April 2007. The scheme had to be implemented through the Education Department here in coordination with the School Development and Management Committees (SDMCs) of the respective schools and completed by March 2008. But the scheme was pending because there was no information on the requirement of works in each school. It was also delayed because the action plan was not submitted by the project officer of the Education Department to the zilla panchayat. The failure of the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat to review the progress under the SSA scheme also made the authorities concerned neglect its implementation. A few months ago, the Government directed the zilla panchayat to finalise the action plan for speedy implementation of the works in the identified schools in the district and complete it by March. But the project officer of the Education Department took it up only in December. He submitted the action plan along with the estimates to the zilla panchayat seeking its approval this week. R. Amaresh Naik, Deputy Secretary of the zilla panchayat, told The Hindu on Monday that earlier, the implementation of the development works in the schools was pending for some time following objections by the Director of SSA, who wanted the zilla panchayat to improve infrastructure in schools with its own funds. However, the issue had now been cleared and the works were being implemented with funds available under the SSA.It was expected that the work in all the identified schools would start shortly, he added.
