Belgaum sugar units told to crush cane grown in district first

Staff Correspondent

‘They have to crush 110 tonnes of sugarcane this season’

Belgaum: Deputy Commissioner M.E. Shivalingamurthy has directed the managements of all sugar factories in the district not to crush sugarcane from neighbouring States before crushing sugarcane grown in the district.

At a meeting with the representatives of various sugar factories in the district here on Monday, he said that cooperative and private sugar factories had to crush 110 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in the district during the current crushing season.

Only 38 lakh tonnes of sugarcane had been crushed till January 5. The managements of sugar factories should ensure that the remaining 72 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed on time, he said. The Deputy Commissioner asked the managements to accord priority to sugarcane growers registered with their factories while issuing cutting orders. No factory should lift sugarcane from areas registered with other sugar factories without obtaining permission from his office, he said.

He asked the factories to disburse subsidy to growers.
