42 tanks to be filled in Anantapur district

Copious inflow:The reservoir water flowing into the right canal after lifting of sluice shutters at dam site near Korrakodu in Anantapur on Monday

ANANTAPUR: Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy on Monday released water to the Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR) Right Canal by lifting the shutters of a sluice near the reservoir. In all, 42 tanks would be impounded with water.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said flow of water in the canal and impounding of tanks would improve groundwater table in the surroundings.

Storage

Asking the farmers not to waste water, he said percolation of water would also improve water availability in their borewells. About 4 tmc ft water was stored in the PABR now and about 2.82 tmc ft would be given to the tanks under the Right Canal, he explained.

Unlike the previous TDP government which had restricted its promises only to statements, the Congress government led by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had been keeping all his promises, Mr. Diwakar Reddy said. Pressure maintained by the elected representatives from the district on the Government has made the Government allocate 10 tmc ft water to PABR and release it to the linked systems.

Linkage feasibility

The insistence of MP Mr. Venkatarami Reddy for linking Gooty, Y.T.Cheruvu and Pathakotha Chervu tanks to the Hundri-Neeva canal system was also bearing fruit now with the officials agreeing to work out the feasibility. He hoped that it would materialise soon.

Superintendent Engineer of Tungabhadra Project Right High Level Canal (HLC) N. Somi Reddy said forty-two tanks in Anantapur rural, Kuderu, Atmakuru, Tadimarri, Kanaganapalli, Dharmavaram and Bathalapalli mandals would be filled with water from PABR.

Anantapur Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha, Anantapur and Hindupur Members of Parliament A. Venkatarami Reddy and G. Nizamuddin, legislators B. Narayana Reddy, S. Sailajanath and District Collector N. Sridhar were present on the occasion.
