Extend train services

The Southern Railway is operating trains from Madurai to Tenkasi. Since broad gauge conversion work between Rameswaram and Manamadurai section work has been completed and trains are being operated on this stretch, the Madurai-bound trains from Tenkasi must be extended to Rameswaram to serve pilgrims from southern parts of the State.

Tax exemption

The maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens bill ensures adequate care of the aged and provides for jail sentence and fine for wards who neglect their parents in their old age. But, no parent, however ill-treated and discarded by his son, will have the heart to go to court to get the latter imprisonment, for not doing his filial duty. The Government can help senior citizens to maintain themselves in a graceful and dignified way. They can be taken off the income-tax net and granted full tax exemption. The annual fee charged by banks for their ATM cards may be waived. An appreciable reduction in property tax and water tax and charges for the house occupied by them should be allowed. These small concessions will definitely go a long way in mitigating the hardship of the elders. Besides, 60 (age) should be uniformly taken to qualify for the status of senior citizens.

Subways needed

In Nagercoil, places such as Veppamoodu junction, Anna bus stand, Kottar junction. Tower junction, Vadasery and Collectorate are congested at all times what with public thronging the State and Central Government offices, shopping places and marriage halls. Pedestrians, especially students find it hard to cross road at these places. Sometimes accidents do occur at these places.

Hence subways must be constructed at these places.

Post office inaccessible

The post office at Tiruchendur used to function on the North Car Street, accessible from all partsof the town. It is now located at a remote area almost at the end of T.B. Road. It does not come under any bus route ever since the bus terminus was shifted from Subramaniya Swamy temple premises to the seashore side. Now, post office users must take their own vehicles or hire autorickshaws, which charge exorbitant rates.

I therefore request the postal authorities to consider re-locating the post office at a convenient place and easily accessible.

I also take this opportunity to request the Regional Transport Office authorities to consider re-locating the office from the present location which is about three km away from old bus stand on the Tirunelveli route where the buses do not stop.

K.K. Krishnamurthy,

Tiruchendur.
