Eight fishermen taken into custody

Kendrapara: Eight fishermen were taken into custody from Gahirmatha sanctuary area while illegally fishing along the prohibited coastal water territory in deep-sea trawlers, official sources said here on Monday.

Sources at the Rajnagar mangrove forest division said a surveillance squad spotted the vessels during the weekend near Babuballi island off Gahirmatha coast, where concentration of breeding turtles is pronounced and arrested the intruders besides seizing the trawlers. The crew members were taken into custody. Fish worth nearly Rs. 2 lakhs besides fishing nets and implements were seized from their possession, they said. The arrested fishermen hailed from Digha in West Bengal. With this, the number of fishing vessels intercepted for unlawful intrusion into marine sanctuary area had gone up to 17 since November 1, 2007.

The Orissa Government had clamped fishing ban for four months along the 20-km stretch Gahirmatha marine sanctuary from November 1 last in view of the ensuing mass nesting of endangered olive ridley sea turtles.

The prohibition was in accordance with provisions of Orissa the Marine Fishing Regulation Act (OMFRA). PTI
