Mahanti receives suspension order

Correspondent

State will take steps ‘appropriate to law’, says Chief Minister

The senior official refuses to talk to media

He was suspended in October

CUTTACK: Senior IPS officer and DGP rank officer B B Mahanti who was granted bail by a Rajasthan court last week received his suspension order and draft charges from the Orissa Government on Monday. Mahanti who arrived in Cuttack on Sunday went to Bhubaneswar and met the Home Secretary on Monday morning. He was asked to collect his suspension order and draft charges from the Home Department Special Secretary.

It may be recalled here that when Mahanti was placed under suspension in October last year, he was incommunicado and hence these papers were not served on him. It is believed that Mahanti would reply to the charges framed against him and may submit a representation to vacate the suspension order.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the State Government is unlikely to reinstate him soon as the State Government has not yet received the court orders. Reacting to the development, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that the government would take steps “appropriate to law” in the case of Mahanti.

The charges

It was further learnt that the charges drafted against Mahanti by the State Government are mainly related to his unauthorized absence from the headquarters and his refusal to accept the communications from the Government. But sources however, pointed out that his unauthorized visit to Rajasthan capital in November 2006 and the role he played in getting his son on parole also figure in the draft charges.

Mahanti, however, did not make any request in writing to the State Government on Monday with regard to his reinstatement, highly placed sources said.

As usual, the senior IPS officer refused to talk to the media on Monday. It is believed that there is a court embargo on him to not to speak about the case to anybody, particularly to media.

Mahanti also avoided the media on Sunday after his arrival from Rajasthan. He arrived here by train on Sunday afternoon.
