Bank understaffed

The Mannargudi branch of State Bank of India is over crowded daily, including Sundays. The customers have to wait hours together to get their transactions fulfilled. Senior citizens find it difficult to stand in the queue for a long time. In fact, the office has work load of two branches and the present staff strength is low to meet the customers’ demands. Hence, additional staff have to be provided immediately. Separate counters are needed for women and senior citizens and for making entries in the pass books. Will the authorities concerned take immediate steps to redress the grievances of the customers?

Srinivasan,

Mannargudi

‘Honour the heroes’

During Republic Day, we honour freedom fighters as a mark of respect to their selfless service to the nation. Likewise, wards of armed forces personnel, who sacrificed their precious lives to defend the honour of the country, and gallantary award winners of the highest order should be honoured every year during such national celebrations to show our gratitude for their service to the country.

‘Resume Hindi news bulletin’

V. Dharmadoss of Tiruvarur has stated in his letter (The Hindu dated January 1) that the mid-day English news between 2 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. is too long and boring. The news bulletin is a national broadcast covering regional, national and international happenings and events. It must continue and should be relayed by all AIR stations.

AIR Tiruchi authorities may consider the resumption of the Hindi bulletin between 8.45 p.m. and 9 p.m. This will help us to learn Tamil, English and Hindi. All Hindi bulletins have been stopped and replaced with songs and other musical programmes. Being a habitual listener of AIR, Tiruchi, I request the authorities to resume all five-minute news broadcasts and the night Hindi bulletin to help achieve the real goal of Infotainment.

A. Haja Abdul Khader,

Kudos for TNSTC

I thank the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation for introducing vestibule buses in Tiruchi city. The Corporation should extend such a facility to Thanjavur town. I also request the State Express Transport Corporation, which has introduced air-conditioned buses from Tiruchi to Chennai and Bangalore, to operate AC buses from Thanjavur to these destinations.

Lydia Mercy,

Thanjavur

Bad state of roads

Most of the roads in Kumbakonam temple city are bad due to the recent heavy downpour. They are unfit even for pedestrians to walk, leave alone vehicular movement. I request the authorities to take action to re-lay and repair the roads on a war footing.

K. Santhanam,

Kumbakonam

e-governance

The computerised system of collection of various taxes, fees and lease revenue was introduced in 2004 by the municipalities and it enables the tax payers to obtain receipts immediately after the remittances of dues are made. But to facilitate this e-governance in urban local bodies, all manual records were transferred to the computerised system but the data is yet to be reconciled with the manual records for rectification of clerical errors and omissions. Unless those defects are rectified, e-governance introduced in municipalities is of no use and the urban local bodies have to incur double expenditure for the purchase of stationery and registers for the continued maintenance of manual records and for the operation of computerised system.

R.S. Moorthy,

Karur

Postal delay

Even as the postal department is launching many new products, it displays apathy towards customers. The postal stationery sold by the department viz. inland letters and envelopes are poor in quality. The inland letters, printed 10 years ago, are mutilated. The postage stamps do not have enough adhesive resulting in much inconvenience. Further, the delivery of ordinary letters in time is given a go by, resulting in inordinate delay even for small distance destinations. It is time the department took suitable steps to improve their service to maintain their people-friendly image.

M. Sethuraman,

Tiruchi
