Leaders extend greetings

PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy and leaders of various political parties have greeted the people on the occasion of Pongal.

Mr.Mithi described Pongal as a unique festival which had the tradition of honouring the working class. “May the festival of Pongal bring happiness and prosperity in the lives of the people of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Let us also share the joy of giving, on this festival day,” he said.

Mr.Rangasamy said the festival symbolised the rich cultural heritage of Tamils.

The strategy adopted by the government in the farm sector was aimed at ensuring stable income to the farmers, besides enhancing their standard of living. Agricultural sector in the UT had been undergoing remarkable transformation, thanks to introduction of new technologies, better irrigation, upgraded infrastructure and extended market facilities. The government would continue to implement programmes in this direction, he added.

Convenor of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam R.V.Janakiraman appealed to the people to rededicate themselves to the cause of progress of society, besides promoting communal harmony.

Leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi’s parliamentary party M.Ramadass said the proposal to implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in the UT from April would pave the way for human resources development and enhancement of common facilities in the rural areas.

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam A.Anbalagan said Pongal was celebrated by people cutting across caste and religious lines. He appealed to the youth to defeat attempts to divide people on caste lines.

Vice-President of the Puducherry Munnetra Congress K.Lakshminarayanan expressed the hope that the festival would ensure eternal prevalence of unblemished love and happiness.
