House of Kannur MP’s kin attacked

Staff Reporter

Sequel to violence in Azhikode panchayat limits

KANNUR: The house of Kannur MP A.P. Abdullakutty’s sister-in-law at Pallikkulam near here was attacked by suspected Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in the early hours of Monday.

The attack was apparently a sequel to the incidents of violence that took place at Azhikode panchayat on Sunday following the killing of Democratic Youth Federation of India worker M. Dhanesh late Saturday night.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s former State president C.K. Padmanabhan’s house at Vankulathuvayal had come under attack by alleged Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the police, the house of the MP’s sister-in-law, Sharmini, at EMS Nagar at Pallikkulam was damaged in stone-throwing by a group of assailants who stormed the house and kept the MP’s relatives staying there, including his mother-in-law, Safiyath (52), in a state of horror for some time by exploding country bombs. The police said that nine windowpanes had been destroyed in the stone-throwing incident. The MP’s mother-in-law fainted when the house came under attack. She has been admitted to hospital here.

Mr. Abdullakutty had stayed in the house till he shifted to his newly constructed house last year.

Areas in Azhikode panchayat witnessed violence on Sunday night as CPI(M) workers hurled country bombs at BJP workers at Neerkadavu here. A CPI(M) worker suffered severe burns in his hand when a bomb he carried exploded. The police said the situation was under control in the areas.

Clash

Two CPI(M) and Indian Union Muslim League workers each were injured in clashes between workers of the rival parties at Chapparappadavu, near Taliparamba, on Monday.

IUML worker and fish vendor K.M. Assainar and newspaper agent Hussain and CPI(M) sympathiser P.D. Muraleedharan and party worker Anil were injured in separate attacks at Chapparappadavu, which had been tense over the last few days.
