Glorification of services through media will not be allowed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council has suspended the registration of V.S.R. Prasad, professor and Head of Department of Medicine, Osmania Medical College here, after a charge against him that he received Rs. 10,000 for passing an MBBS final year student was proved.

His name will be erased from the medical register of the State for a period of one year, the council chairman Vallabhaneni Ram Prasad and its ethical and malpractices panel chief P. Vijaya Chander Reddy stated at a news conference here on Monday.

They said another doctor of Tirupati, M. Sinivasa Rao, was also suspended for one year for issuing fake certificates to support claims from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The council took up an inquiry against Rao, who ran a nursing home, based on a complaint by the Vigilance and Enforcement wing.

Dr. Ram Prasad said the council decided to enforce the code of medical ethics against glorification of services by hospitals through advertisements in print and visual media. The council will not allow advertisement of medical services except in cases as inauguration of hospitals, prolonged absence of doctors on account of foreign tours or change in locations of their practice.

Elected

He also said the general body meeting of the council last week supported regulation of advertisements by hospitals with the help of external agencies like local bodies or any other supervising authority.

It appealed to hospitals to restrict advertisements to ethical limits.

The general body meeting elected Balbeer Singh Yadav as vice-chairman of the council for the coming year. G. Balamaddaiah, K.L. Sampath Kumar and K. Ramesh Reddy were unanimously elected executive members.
