Front page

The editorial “Our Front Page” (which originally appeared on Jan. 14, 1958 and was reproduced on Monday) clearly exemplified the need to adapt to the changing tastes and reading habits of readers. It is gratifying to note that the two things The Hindu has not changed throughout its existence are fairness in journalism and the traditional logo.

I am happy what has been stated in the editorial 50 years ago — “… there will be no let-up in the high standards of journalism the paper has tried to maintain through nearly a century of public service” — holds good even today. Old-time readers know that the newspaper has not deviated from its original path during its long journey of well over a century.

I also remember that a photograph appeared on the front page of the dummy miniature copy of the paper with President Rajendra Prasad and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru accompanied by the word ‘Specimen’ in big, red letters printed across the paper on the page.

S. Nallasivan,

Tirunelveli

I recollect the day you changed the front page in 1958. I was already an avid reader of The Hindu and I welcomed the change. You have brought back good memories and I am happy at the progress of the newspaper. Thank you.

G. Edward David,

I am one of the thousands of your dedicated readers and have been reading The Hindu for almost 60 years. I distinctly remember looking at the new face of The Hindu on January 14, 1958.

It was an extremely pleasant surprise. I remember reading through the new front page in quick time over a bowl of steaming venn pongal.

Col. C.V. Venugopalan (retd.),

Palakkad
