Richardson scores a brace

LONDON: Kieran Richardson scored both goals to help Sunderland beat Portsmouth 2-0 and improve its chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Richardson struck in the 33rd and 43rd minutes at the Stadium of Light on Sunday and also hit the crossbar from 25 metres in the second half against a team which had won seven of its previous eight league and cup games.

The results: Blackburn 2 (Samba 53, Roberts 90) bt Bolton 1 (Nolan 43); Sunderland 2 (Richardson 33, 44) bt Portsmouth 0. — AP
